Before psychologists identified multiple “intelligences,” little education was thought to occur in museums.

At the New England Aquarium, Dr. Boyle led completion of The Thinking Gallery, the first major public exhibit funded by the National Science Foundation. The exhibit was designed to spark learning of simple biological principles.

Under Boyle’s lead, the NY Aquarium designed exhibits to study informal science education in action. Collaborating with colleagues nationwide, they showed that visitors do learn and that repeat visits allow small experiences to grow into a comprehension of scientific concepts.

This work underscored the transformative role of museums, aquariums, zoos, and similar venues in forwarding public science learning, which now has been affirmed by the National Academies of Sciences.
